Lessons

Shine bands get students involved in serious play! Learn about teamwork and make friends while improving your musical ability. Students choose the music they want to play and are placed in the appropriate band(s). They participate in live performance and studio recording and engineering.
Sessions run 30 weeks unless otherwise stated. Registration is accepted after the beginning of the season. Fees will be collected upon registration and placement in a group.
The fees are divided into three (3) parts over the course of the year in order to ease the financial responsibility. Three (3) post-dated cheques are collected upon registration for the sake of efficiency.

Payment for 2010/2011

The following 4 step payment formula is used to determine fees:

1. Band Size

    • Bands with 6 or more participants - $15/hour/member. The same rate since 2003
    • Bands of 5 members – $18/hour/member
    • Bands of 4 or less -$21/hour/member

2. Practice time per week based on group type.

    • Clinic Groups- 1hr class/week- The intention of a clinic group is not to record for the sake of producing product, but to develop skills in order to write music, improvise, prepare for performances etc. Existing clinic groups 2010/2011 are:
      • Jazz Focus
      • Priceless
      • Mothers and sons from others
    • Junior recording groups- 90 minute class/week- These are groups whose goal is to record cover material with the intention of moving toward original composition. Existing junior recording groups for 2010/2011 are:
      • Prime Time
      • Mini Mass
      • The Dube brothers
      • The Coffee Brothers
    • Senior Recording groups- 2hr class/week- These classes are intended for established bands who produce original material and are established performers. Existing senior recording groups for 2010/2011 are:
      • The Riot Police
      • The Warblers
    • Composition and production development course- 1hr class/week.- These classes are run in a similar manner to private lessons and therefore do not fall into the category of group lessons. Interested participants must enrol as private lesson.

3. Number of bands Joined-

    • Players can participate in more than one band without paying an extra fee, HOWEVER this does effect how the number of members in a band is calculated. The payment structure can become very complicated and is dealt with on a band by band basis due to the fact that bands often change membership throughout the year. All final payment arrangement decisions are made by the program director.

4. Siblings

  • Siblings who participate in the Shine program automatically pay 75% of the total price based on the above criteria to keep costs per family reasonable.
      • Need of existing bands to complete their membership due to resignation.
      • Skill level
