Bio

The Kelly Craig and Brian Browne duo make a statement with their sophisticated approach to ambient jazz that’s a perfect fit for cocktail music, restaurants, receptions and conventions

Kelly Craig and Brian Browne are two veteran jazz musicians with a long list of performing and recording credits between them. Over the last several years performing together in a duo format, they have fine-tuned their approach to musical dialogue with one another, their respective musical backgrounds making a clear impression on their sound.

Born and raised in Regina, Saskatchewan, Kelly started in music at a young age as a member of a police sponsored band organization and went on to develop his technical and performance skills with a combination of formal training with top-notch instructors and weekend jam sessions where he  in gut bucket guitar blues, R&B and soul styles. From 2004 to 2008, he performed with the world-famous Motown studio band, The Funk Brothers and still plays with the group when they play in the north-eastern quadrant of North America, and overseas. Much of Kelly’s improvisational inspiration comes from performing with Brian Browne in a duo setting. Brian has encouraged him to draw upon his early influences for a blues-coloured sense of melody and tonality. Brian’s harmonic sophistication feeds the ears in a pure, unfettered manner. Brian re-harmonizes standards on stage with no preconceived plan, making the statement of strong melodic ideas paramount in Kelly’s improvised sections.

With a musical career that spans over fifty years, Brian Browne has gained a reputation as a true Canadian jazz legend. Originally from Montreal, Brian Browne moved as a teenager to Ottawa, where his musical career soon began. By the age of eighteen he was playing in local clubs and soon had his own CBC radio programme. He studied at the Berklee School of Music and later won a scholarship to study with Oscar Peterson in Toronto. In 1986 he opened Zoe’s Lounge in Ottawa’s Chateau Laurier hotel and remained there for a year as musical director. He subsequently moved to New York City, where he spent several years actively in the music scene. With his return to Ottawa, long-time fans of Browne’s soulful, swinging piano sound are once again delighted by his local appearances.
